Classes

We never forget that we are running an English school. Our aim is to help you to improve the English you have learned and to extend this and learn more by giving you interesting classes with plenty of opportunity to practice. We want you to be able to use English accurately and fluently, and we want you to enjoy using English. Our teachers are very carefully selected and all have the right qualifications and teaching certificates to be able to teach for UIC and to help you to achieve this.

Before you are placed into a class you will be given a test so we can make sure you are in the right place to maximize your learning. This is a test of grammatical knowledge and fluency of spoken English. Your class is organised firstly within an age band (7-10 / 11-13 / 14+) and within those bands into levels. We also make sure there is a good nationality mix in the class to give you the best opportunity of speaking and using English. The maximum number of students in one class is 15.

In all of our centres we have dedicated language teaching rooms which are well-equipped and have plenty of light and space. We have our own books and materials. During your classes you will keep a diary and folder for all your work which you can use later on when you return home.

The English classes are all held in the morning – following morning assembly at 9am. Classes run for 15 hours up to lunch time. On Thursday the classes will finish earlier to enable the excursion to work properly but the time will be made up on Friday. The classes are divided into 3 areas: Functional English (where the focus is on communication and helping you to become an independent learner), English Skills (speaking and listening, reading and writing) and Active English (teaching English through a subject – for example Drama, Business, Radio broadcasting or Comedy)

The academic programme is developed and managed by the Director of Studies who works permanently for UIC and spends much of the year working on the preparation for the summer.
